Have a wool rug? Clean it yourself!

Rug Wool Cleaning: Do It Yourself

Wool rugs are high quality rugs and will last you for a very long time if they are properly maintained. The cuddly softness and vibrant colors of a wool area rug take a huge beating as dirt, dust and grime settles on it from day to day. To maintain the softness and attractiveness of a wool rug, it is important to clean it regularly. Most people are surprised to find that small to medium sized hand woven wool rugs as well as braided wool rugs can easily be cleaned at home. Just follow these simple instructions and restore your traditional or contemporary wool area rug to its original form.

These are some of the regular cleaning measures that you need to take to preserve the beauty of your wool rugs:

• Vacuum clean the wool area rug on a regular basis. This will ensure that dirt and grime doesn’t get settled into the weaving.

• If there are any spills or stains, remove them immediately. If the spill is dry, scrape it out and vacuum later to ensure no particles remain encrusted in the rug. If it is a wet spill, blot the spill immediately using paper or clean cloth towels. If you need to use a stain remover, use one which is appropriate for use on wool carpets. Test the stain remover on a less visible part of the rug to ensure that no discoloration occurs. Never try to scrub a stain as it can cause an even more difficult to remove stain.

For thorough cleaning of your hand woven wool rug or braided wool rug, follow these instructions:

• Shake the rug outside your house to remove all excess dirt and dust. Then vacuum the wool rug on both sides.

• If you find any previously unnoticed stains, clean them up with a stain remover.

• Place the rug on a paved area like the patio or the deck of your house and hose down the carpet in clean water.

• Add about two capfuls of a mild detergent in a bucket of water and mix up the suds. Dip a clean sponge in this solution and Wipe your wool area rug with it.

• Rinse the suds away. You can then roll up the rug in dry towels to soak up excess water.

• You may also want to consider using a Wet/Dry vacuum to suck up the dirty water out of the wool rug.

• Once the water has been drained of all excess water, lay the rug flat to dry. Do not dry the rug in the sun as it may cause shrinkage and discoloration.

• Never leave a wool area rug too wet for too long. This can lead to mildew and bacteria growth on the wool rug. Ensure that your wool rug is completely dry to avoid inviting microorganisms.

Hopefully this helps a little bit!
